The 2024 Policy Dialogue: Well-Known Marks and Nontraditional Trademarks in Türkiye, organized by the International Trademark Association (INTA), was successfully hosted at İstanbul Bilgi University. The event featured a series of insightful discussions focused on critical issues in trademark protection.
The event started with the opening remarks of Tat Louembe and Gül Okutan Nilsson and followed by the keynote speech of Güler Ayyıldız Dalma.
The first panel, titled "Protection and Enforcement of Well-Known Marks" was moderated by Uğur Aktekin and brought together a group of experts. Fülürya Yusufoğlu Bilgin focused on the protection status of well-known marks under Article 6bis of the Paris Convention, including the measures to protect them against dilution. Additionally, Fethi Merdivandiscussed the functions of the Well-Known Trademark Registry of TURKPATENT in light of a recent Court of Cassation decision, while Marie-Laure Bonnaffous provided an industry perspective on the protection of well-known trademarks.
The second panel, moderated by Pınar Arıkan, focused on the "Protection of Nontraditional Marks" and featured insights from various experts. In this panel, Özge Bayır discussed TÜRKPATENT practices regarding Non-Traditional Marks, while Eda Çataklar addressed the challenges of registering these marks and the scope of protection available. Lastly, Neval Berdibek shared the story of the “Salt Bae” mark in terms of its registration and protection as a motion trademark.
